WATER works are set to affect three busy Greenock roads over the course of four weeks, starting at the end of the month.

Drivers are being warned that there will be closures in place on MacDougall Street and Ratho Street and the A8 will be reduced to one lane at off-peak times.

Scottish Water will be carrying out work in the area to improve the supply infrastructure to reduce the risk of pipes bursting in the future.

From Wednesday July 31, a stretch of MacDougall Street will be closed from its junction with the A8 up to Cartsdyke Railway Station for approximately one week. Access will be maintained for local businesses.

Starting on Monday August 5, Ratho Street will be shut from its junction with the A8 to where it meets Belville Street for around a fortnight.

Again, local access will be allowed.

The A8 westbound carriageway will also be down to one lane during off-peak times - between 9.30am and 3.30pm - during the course of the project.

Ruaridh MacGregor, Scottish Water's corporate affairs regional manager, said: "This upgrade work on our water infrastructure will help reduce the chance of pipes bursting and means that our customers in the area continue to enjoy clear, fresh water.

"We'd like to thank all road users and customers in advance for their patience and understanding during this work.

"Some customers may experience a change in water pressure and/or discoloured water during the works.

"If this happens, simply turn on the cold water tap in your kitchen and let the water flow slowly until it runs clear."

Scottish Water says the street and lane closures have been agreed in partnership with Inverclyde Council and trunk road operators Scotland TranServ.

The work will be carried out by the company's partner agency, Caledonia Water Alliance, with the entire project due for completion around the beginning of September.
