A PORT policeman is preparing to pound a different beat when he takes on a walk in aid of the cancer charity that supported his wife through treatment.

PC John Jamieson says the incredible care and support his wife Kim received during her battle against breast cancer has inspired him to to sign up for a 10k walk in aid of the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Kim underwent months of treatment which just finished a few weeks ago and she is recovering well.

John, 57, said: "Kim was so brave - she was a right wee trooper and got through it all.

"That's why I wanted to give something back to the Beatson, as the treatment and the way she was looked after there was second to none."

John said it was a huge shock when Kim, 55, his wife of 32 years, was diagnosed with breast cancer last October.

He said: "She wasn't unwell and there wasn't any outward signs whatsoever.

"It was discovered after a routine mammogram.

"It was lucky that they caught it."

The couple are hugely relieved now that Kim's successful treatment is over.

John said: "It's been a long 10 months with operations, chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions and endless scans.

"It has been a long, hard slog."

John says the ordeal has made him appreciate how lucky we are to have the NHS.

He said: "As well as the Beatson, Kim also spent time at Crosshouse Hospital.

"All the doctors and nurses were exceptional - I can't fault them.

"Some people moan about the NHS but when you go through something like that, you realise just how great it is."

John was also keen to thank his boss Chief Inspector Debbie Reilly for her support over the past few months.

He said: "After Kim's operation she needed help so since then I've been able to work round my shifts so that I could go to appointments with her.

"Debbie Reilly has been exceptionally good with me."

John says he can't wait to complete the charity walk on Sunday August 25 at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow with beloved black Labrador Bruce.

He said: "I'm looking forward to it.

"I enjoy walking - I do a lot of walking at work and also when I'm off work I enjoy going out walking my dog."

Ahead of the 10k, John has already raised over £800 for the charity through his online Just Giving page.
