A KEEN swimmer is so determined to attend training that he kayaks across the River Clyde to Gourock Outdoor Pool.

Campbell Cromar loves training with Inverclyde Masters Swimming Club so much that he goes to extreme lengths to travel from his home in Helensburgh.

As long as the weather is not too rough he takes to the water and makes his way across.

The 56-year-old said: "It feels amazing to kayak over when it's calm.

"It's a lot quicker too, as it's just over two miles.

"I actually bought the kayak for my wife Erica who is also a member of the Masters but she's not used it yet."

Campbell, who grew up in Gourock, says he loves training with the Masters due to the excellent coaching from Donald Muirhead.

He added: "Donald is unbelievable."

Donald says it's remarkable to have someone crossing the river themselves just to attend training.

He said: "Campbell comes across from Helensburgh every Saturday and Sunday morning to join us in a 90 minute training session.

"Recently he decided to kayak across from Helensburgh, train and then kayak back.

"He has a love for the Gourock Pool, where he swam and trained as a boy with the Gourock Swimming Club.

"That is dedication for you."
