A GREENOCK pensioner has criticised council bosses for closing two busy roads just as the schools go back.

James Terrey was dismayed to read in the Telegraph that Manor Crescent and Cove Road will be shut at their respective junctions for more than a week.

The closures will take place between August 17 and August 25 to allow council workers to carry out resurfacing work.

The schools return after the summer break on Monday August 19.

Mr Terrey, of Newark Street, said: "I can't believe this is happening just when the schools are starting back.

"I take my grandson to Clydeview Academy on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

"The road is very busy in the morning when school starts and when they come out.

"This work should have been done when the school was off, or during the autumn holidays.

"I think doing this at this time is absolutely crazy.

"The timing beggars belief."

A diversion will be in place for motorists but Mr Terrey fears that congestion will quickly build up.

He told the Telegraph: "We won't be able to drive up Manor Crescent and if we drive up Larkfield Road that channelised junction is terrible."

Inverclyde Council today defended itself over the roadworks.

A spokesman said: “While we will always try to arrange roadworks to minimise disruption, by their nature there will always be some.

"The aim with roadworks, such as the carriageway resurfacing we are delivering here, is to improve the road for residents and visitors.

"While the work takes place it will mean a short term hassle for around a week, assuming there are no unforeseen issues, but we hope that the longer term gain is worth it as we continue to invest in improving our roads.”
