GREENOCK'S golden girl Kareena Cuthbert says it feels amazing to win a major European hockey tournament.

Kareena, who started her career at Greenock Hockey Club, was 'ecstatic' to captain the Scottish women's side to victory in the European Hockey Federation Championship II after a stunning win over Italy on Saturday.

The 32-year-old, who came from Eldon Street, said: "It was phenomenal because it was a sell out crowd at the final.

"All our friends and family came to see us which made it so special.

"I can't describe how it made me feel, getting to play in front of the people you love and also so many hockey fans who were there to support us."

As champions, the team have now been promoted to the top tier.

Kareena added: "Next for Scotland is making sure we continue to build on this.

"We are a top tier division team and we need to keep proving that and get back out there and back training for the next big tournament that comes along."

Kareena is already back at work as a physiotherapist.

She said: "We are not paid athletes so we spend a lot of time training and preparing using unpaid time off.

"So I'm back at work.

"It's tough but I wouldn't change it for the world."
