AROUND 300 jobs have been saved at Ferguson Marine after the Scottish Government began nationalisation of the troubled Port Glasgow shipyard.
Trade union officials say the process to take the Newark facility into public ownership is now underway - and welcomed the decision.
The yard has now been saved from going under for the second time in just five years.
Gary Cook, Scottish organiser of the GMB and chair of the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions in Scotland, said: “Nationalisation secures the immediate future of the yard and that is a very welcome development, particularly after all the recent uncertainty.
“Our members were caught in the middle of a situation that had nothing to do with them and their relief will be palpable. It is five years since the yard went bust and the Scottish Government has prevented that from happening again.”
