A YOUNG martial arts star is getting to grips with glory after claiming medals at national and international competitions.

Charlotte Willshire only took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu just over a year ago.

But since then, the talented 12-year-old of Orchard Crescent in Kingston Dock, has been on the podium at every event she has entered.

She recently secured bronze medals at both the US Open competition in Florida and at the Junior Worlds in Wolverhampton.

Charlotte, who trains at GF Team Scotland which is run by Chris Carmichael in Greenock, says she loves the sport.

She said: "When I compete I'm nervous at first but when you get on the matt your only focus is on winning and all your nerves go away."

Her proud parents Daniel and Christine, are very proud of her.

Daniel said: "This is something she chose to do herself.

"We do a bit of travelling to get to competitions, so for her to have the confidence to go with no coaches is amazing.

"I think she has become a lot more confident."

Charlotte initially tried out Mixed Martial Arts but due to her age she was unable to compete.

She tried Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instead - a martial art and combat sport system that focuses on grappling, with particular emphasis on ground fighting.

The sport is founded on the concept that a smaller person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using technique.

Since taking up the sport, Charlotte has not looked back.

Her dad Daniel said: "Charlotte has taken part in eight competitions and has won nine medals - four golds, two silver and three bronze."

Her bronze at the US Open saw her competing against boys

Daniel said: "I think Charlotte was the only person from the UK competing."

Charlotte, who also plays the bass guitar, is now in training for the Scottish Kids League competition in Glenrothes in October and then she will make her way to Manchester for the 'King of the North' competition the following month.
