DRIVERS face charges at six more local car parks as council bosses press ahead with a £2 payment plan.

The local authority has drawn up a proposal to charge drivers using Kempock Street East and Kempock Street West in Gourock.

They also want to implement fees at Shore Street, Fore Street and Princes Street in Port Glasgow.

Charges would also be introduced at Lochwinnoch Road car park in Kilmacolm.

Motorists would still be permitted to park for up to three hours free of charge but if they leave their vehicles any longer the charges would kick in.

The £2 charge would be in force Monday to Friday.

Councillors will debate the proposal at a meeting next week.

A report prepared by their officials said: "An effective charging policy deters long-stay parking close to town centres and frees up space for short-stay parking which is helpful to customers and is economically more advantageous."

Where car parks are in residential areas, people living there will be able to apply for a free permit.

This would allow the holder to park for longer than the time restrictions free of charge.

If councillors agree, the legal process to introduce the fees will start next month with motorists facing the £2 per day cost from April 2020.

The council included increasing off-street parking income by £100,000 as part of its budget process earlier this year.

Ten council car parks already have charges, with the regime currently generating around £116,000 in a year.
