FAMILY and friends of an 'amazing' Greenock mum who passed away after a battle against cancer have raised over £3,000 for charity in her memory.

Lorna Beaton, a much loved wife to Scott and a devoted mum to her sons Lyle, 28, and Corey, 19, sadly passed away on May 15.

Throughout her illness, Lorna, 52, of Eldon Street, was cared for by the team at Ardgowan Hospice.

As a tribute to Lorna, her family and friends have raised £2,800 for the hospice plus £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Scott, who works as a firefighter in Greenock, said they will never forget the care and support Lorna received from the hospice.

He said: "Lorna was full of life.

"She was such a strong character - she lit up every room.

"She was such a big character and had a lot of friends.

"Her sons were her pride and joy.

"Lorna went the hospice Access Centre and she loved the staff.

"She loved going there and meeting new friends.

"It gave her a wee outlet.

"Even at the end they were fantastic - the love and the care they showed her was amazing.

"The hospice is a wonderful place."

It was back in 2011 when Lorna was diagnosed with breast cancer.

A year later she received the all clear and life went back to normal for the family.

However, in 2015 Lorna received devastating news that the cancer had returned and had spread to her bones and various organs.

Scott added: "Effectively there was nothing much more they could do apart from controlling it and managing the symptoms.

"They gave her a year to live in 2015 but she battled it for another four years."

Scott says he is so grateful to everyone who has helped to raise £3,300 in his late wife's memory.

He is especially keen to thank all the staff and regulars at the Old Wherry Tavern in Gourock, which is run by his sisters Jocelyn Fleming and Victoria Murdoch.

Scott said: "I would like to thank all the customers at the Wherry who have been so generous.

"I'm also so grateful to Paul Gallacher, who runs the pub quiz every Sunday night as he helped with the fundraising."

Lorna's sister-in-law Jocelyn says the money is going to a great cause.

She said: "The care the hospice provide is second to none.

"Lorna was so full of life and so glamorous.

"She was always concerned about other people.

"You never heard her complain.

"I would like to thank all our customers, who have been brilliant.

"We have been at the pub for two years and in that time the customers have raised about £6,000 for different charities.

"This is the second time we've raised money for the hospice and we'll continue."

Scott says his colleagues at Greenock Fire Station have been a tower of strength and they also fundraised, while there was a huge sum raised from a collection at Lorna's funeral.

He said: "The fire service have been fantastic.

"If ever I needed time off, there was never any issue.

"They gave me a lot of support - I feel very fortunate as it was a massive help."

Alex Mula, who works in the hospice's fundraising team, said: "This is a fantastic amount of money, we are so appreciative.

"We want to say thank you to Lorna's family.

"Lorna always brightened up the hospice.

"I remember her coming to the day centre and there was always a lot of laughter when she was there."
