MORTON supporters have funnelled in the first payment of a six-figure investment which will be used to top up the club's transfer kitty.

Cappielow legends George Anderson and Allan McGraw have handed over a £6,000 cheque to Ton chief executive Dave MacKinnon on behalf of Morton Club Together.

It is the first tranche from the ambitious supporters' group set up in the summer with the aim of delivering £400k of fresh capital in the club over the next 24 months.

In return, the organisation will receive a 15 per cent stake in Morton and a seat on the board in a deal brokered with parent company Golden Casket, which owns 90 per cent of the shares.

Just under 300 fans have so far converted their cash pledges into monthly direct debits, worth nearly £140k.

The presentation of the first cheque was made at Cappielow at half-time on Friday night before Morton staged a sensational comeback to beat Partick Thistle 3-2.

MCT founder Graham McLennan said: "It's another milestone. "This was officially the first payment made and accepted by the club, which triggers the agreement we have reached with Golden Casket and the football club.

"Allan and George are members of MCT and have been engaged with us since the beginning so it was fantastic to have them represent the team in this way."

The agreement with Golden Casket will also see the company wipe £500k of the £2.5m of debt pile owed to it by Morton for every £100k which is handed over by the fans' group.

MCT officials are now preparing to ramp up their campaign to encourage more people to join the scheme and hit the £400k target.

Mr McLennan said: "It's small steps.

"With the number of members we have just now, that's sufficient to support £6k a month for the next 24 months. "But it's growing all the time.

"More and more people are joining every day and converting their pledge.

"We now have the best part of £150k worth of contributions.

"We're now pushing to get more people to join us and reach our target."
