AN inspirational mum from Port Glasgow has set up a new youth community club in her home town.

Claire Saunderson, of Mid Avenue, decided to swing into action when her kids said they were bored during the recent holidays.

She and her friend Amanda Barr took a trip to a budget store in the town and bought bats and balls and water guns and supervised kids playing on a local patch of grass.

Claire, 35, said: "They had water fights and we got them playing rounders and British Bulldog.

"I put it on Facebook and Monica Ellis from community learning and development saw it and she invited me down to the Beacon Arts Centre for family fun sessions and all the families came together."

From that, the Upper Port Glasgow Community Club was formed with a committee of volunteers.

Mum-of-four Claire said: "We have committee training in September and we're also attending a food and hygiene course.

"I am so excited about it all.

"It's given me the motivation to push myself."

Since forming, the group have managed to secure a four week slot at the iYouth Zone in Dubbs Place from September 18 between 3.15 and 5.15pm.

They are also holding a fundraiser at the Port Golf Club on Friday where there will music, a buffet, bingo, raffles and glitter face art.

Claire said: "The money will go towards building up as many materials for arts and crafts as we can.

"We've got a floor plan and we want to have a baby area, a make-up area for girls and a boys section.

"We also want to buy three tablets to produce our own comic and board games."

Claire has her eye on establishing a base at the Devol Centre.

Claire said: "The building is just sitting there, there's a kitchen area and a big main hall, a playpark outside and a football pitch.

"There is so much we could put to good use.

"We want to provide a safe, fun environment where we can bring families together and interact - bring it back to the good old days when we were young."

The committee is made up of Claire, Amanda, Sara Gannon, Kirsty Saunderson, Jennifer Loughlin, Donna Sharpe, Jim Loughlin and Stephen Jenkinson.
