AN adventurer from Greenock prepared for a world-first Arctic expedition by lugging a heavy tyre for nearly 100 miles along the West Highland Way.

Kris Law ramped up preparations for an ambitious bid to reach the polar region known as the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility next year by navigating Scotland's famous route between Milngavie and Fort William.

The 26-year-old personal trainer pulled along a 13 kilogram tyre on his trek.

He was encouraged along the way by friend Martin Casement, who is also from Greenock.

The pals completed the journey in reverse over four days, finishing up at the traditional starting point in Milngavie.

Kris said: "I got the tyre one from a garage in Greenock, although I was regretting it half-way through!

"I ended up a bit beaten up but overall, it was really good. "Physically, it was a good indicator of where I need to get stronger."

The trek not only caught the attention of curious passers-by but also broadcaster John Beattie who interviewed the pair for his BBC Radio Scotland programme.

Kris was spurred on by his pal Martin, who he has known since high school, and his parents stopped off from time to time in their campervan with food supplies.

The duo camped outdoors overnight along the 96-mile - route.

The aim was for Kris to build up his fitness for his stint of the 80-day 'Last Pole' expedition next year.

Family and friends kindly sponsored him to the tune of around £700.

Kris said: "All in all it was a massive success, especially getting the radio interview.

"I also raised a good amount of money for the expedition. "When you do something like this, it's amazing the amount of support you get. "People doing the West Highland Way find it hard enough just walking, so doing something like this stands out.

"Folk either thought I was great or crazy."

Kris has also climbed Munros, including Ben Lomond, with the tyre in preparation for the Arctic adventure - a world-record attempt led by British explorer Jim McNeill.

It will be used to gather crucial data from the region to help with studies into climate change and polar bear numbers.
