A GREENOCK woman who was left 'heartbroken' when her best friend's son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is hosting a special fundraiser to help the family.

Gemma Callan is holding the event after pal Nicola Rankin's boy Michael was diagnosed with the muscle-wasting condition aged just five.

Gemma, 32, has been supporting the family since the diagnosis, cycling around Millport and taking on the Kiltwalk to raise funds.

Her latest fundraiser is a Halloween party in the Italian Club on Union Street.

Gemma said: “Nicola is my best friend, I am really close to the whole family and have known them since before Michael was born.

“My son Josh and Michael also have a special bond.

“To say I was devastated by the diagnosis is an understatement. It broke my heart and it still does.

“We hoped and prayed it wasn’t Duchenne but we need to be strong for Michael, he is an amazing little boy.

“No-one should have to go through what he and his family are experiencing. Currently there is not cure and not a lot of people even know what it is. I didn’t until it became part of my life through Michael.

“I will do anything I can do to raise money or awareness of this life-threatening illness."

Gemma and Nicola have always enjoyed Halloween so it seemed the perfect time to host their latest event.

He said: “The committee at the Italian Club on Union Street have very kindly donated the space and the use of the facilities for free. They have been amazing and I can’t thank them enough.

“Tickets will include a drink on arrival, food and a great night, all for a great cause."

Gemma is hoping to raise £500, which will be put into a fund to buy items Michael needs in the future.

Gemma added: “Michael means the world to me, I'd do anything to help.

"Raising funds and helping financially is good, but just getting to be part of his life and offering support is amazing."

The event will be held on October 26 and tickets are priced at £10.

They can be purchased by contacting Gemma or Nicola on Facebook or by calling 07500584006.
