A PORT Glasgow woman has raised more than £2,500 for charity in memory of her grandfather.

Shannon Mckenna, 26, lost her 'pops' John last August after a long-running battle with Alzheimers.

John, from Springhill Road died aged 82.

Shannon set herself a target of holding a charity event every year in his memory and to raise money for Alzheimer Scotland.

She held a ladies day at the Clyde Suite in Greenock which was attended by 156 people.

They were greeted with a glass of prosecco and given the chance to have their pictures taken by local photographer Jamie Donnelly.

Cash was raised through a raffle and a heads or tails game - with the winner taking home a Michael Kors handbag.

The band Sneaky Treacle entertained guests after a three-course meal before DJ Craig Warnock rounded off the event.

Shannon said: “I honestly couldn’t have been happier with how it all went. Everyone was so complimentary of the day and said how much fun they had.

“Many of the ladies have asked for it to become an annual event so I am looking for a bigger venue for next year which will be able to hold more people.

“I was thrilled I had my granddad's wife Eileen there and the day was given her seal of approval.”

Shannon set out to raise £2,000 for the charity and was delighted to smash her target by £700.

She said: “I think my my pops would be proud.

"He’d probably be a bit upset that he wouldn’t have been able to attend if he was still with us as he would have been in his element having the chance to have that many ladies as his dancing partner!

“He loved to dance and him and my nana used to be regulars on a Saturday night at the Loretta Club and the Celtic Supporters in Laird Street.

"If he had been at the fundraiser he would have danced the feet off every single lady - and been quick to tell them not to look at their feet!”

Shannon has extended a thanks all the staff at the Clyde Suite for hosting the event, to Craig Warnock for taking the time to compare and DJ, Jamie Donnelly for taking the pictures, Louise Thompson of Cupcake Party and Events and Jenna Sweeney of BYJS.
