Greenock Model Railway Show is on track to be the best yet

Organisers say there will be something for everyone to enjoy at the two day event which is being held at the Lyle Kirk in Union Street on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October.

Brian Thompson, chairman of Greenock and District Model Railway Club, which organises the show, says it's 'full steam ahead' as the final countdown begins.

Brian told the Tele: "It's a very family friendly show so we're looking forward to seeing all the children.

"We will give them the chance to play with our Thomas the Tank Engine children's layout.

"The kids absolutely love Thomas.

"Some tots, who are seasoned visitors, even bring their own wee stools so they can see the layouts which is just fantastic."

Big kids will also enjoy the show as there will be 14 intricate exhibits on display including five impressive layouts from the local club plus others from model clubs in Perth, Coupar, Kyle, Renfrewshire and Falkirk.

John Miller, who has been a club member for 40 years, says the show is special as it brings all generations together.

He said: "I'm showing one of my vintage layouts - a Hornby dublo three rail.

"They were quite popular back in the day but they stopped making them in 1964.

"A lot of the older generation will have had one so it'll be nice that they can now show their grandkids what they had when they were a child."

Brian will also have one of his layouts on display - a replica of Kilbowie in Clydebank.

In addition, there will be a pre-war Sir Nigel Gresley model circa 1939-39.

The show is being opened by the Clyde 1 newsreader Rob Waller, whose father David is a member of the club.

Brian added: "There will be a Bron Hebog Welsh Highland narrow gauge layout making its Scottish debut at the show.

"It was made by David, whose son Rob will open our show."

There will also be various trade stands at the show, which will run from 10am to 5pm on the Saturday and noon to 4pm the following day.

Kids who bring along a photo of a train along will get in for free and there will be a prize for the best picture.
