DISABLED access at one of Inverclyde's busiest car parks is to be urgently improved.

The council has agreed to carry out much-needed work on the Bullring in Greenock, thanks to ward councillor Elizabeth Robertson and constituent Johanna Stewart.

Wheelchair user Johanna, an Inverclyde disabled services activist for more than 20 years, contacted Cllr Robertson about the poor condition of the roads, pavements and lack of dropped kerbs for those with mobility issues.

The Broomhill resident was shocked at the state of the car park during a recent visit with a friend and took a video to illustrate just how bumpy and tricky the surfaces are for disabled people to negotiate.

She sent the footage to Cllr Robertson, whose ward takes in Greenock town centre, and the matter was raised with the roads department.

Local authority officials reacted swiftly and have vowed to carry out repairs and improvements within the next few months.

Johanna, who is involved with various local groups including Your Voice and Shopmobility, said: "Parking here is the fastest way to get to the town centre and the Waterfront Retail Park. "I'm very glad the council has come back and said they will do something about it - and so quickly.

"Cllr Robertson has been very helpful."

There is no firm date for the work yet but it is now firmly on the council's radar.

Cllr Robertson said: "When Johanna sent me her video I could see it was really bumpy.

"The surface isn't brilliant but when I saw the footage it illustrated just how bad it is. "I sent it on to the council department that would deal with this and I've had a commitment that they will address the issues and been given a broad timescale of within the next few months. "It's amazing that from when Johanna came to me about this, a few weeks later it's being dealt with.

"I wanted to highlight this as it's someone who has come forward with an issue and the council has responded quickly to it."
