TENACIOUS Greenock teenagers had the 'formula' for success after winning a major award at an international race at Silverstone.

The team from Inverclyde Academy - called the Inver Racers - were in the driving seat at the world final of the Greenpower Challenge.

As part of the challenge the teenagers built and raced their own F24 race car to compete against teams from across the world.

The teens - Chris McClure, David MacKinnon, Christopher Arthur and Kyle Knox - finished 36th out of 50 teams from across the globe.

But they took home the media award for promoting their efforts online and their success in gaining sponsorship.

Paula Leca, who supported the lads during her time at Developing the Young Workforce alongside Colin McLaughlin, a lecturer at West College Scotland, said she is immensely proud of their achievements.

She told the Tele: "It was amazing as there were teams from all over the world.

"They were interviewed for BBC radio and the ITV local news down there.

"It was brilliant, the boys did so well.

"The key thing is the confidence they have gained."

David, 16, said it is an experience he will never forget.

He said: "It was a surreal experience because we were down in the heart of Formula One, in the pits where the cars would be during a Grand Prix.

"To win the media award was a relief knowing how much effort we put into our social media.

"It's experience I'll never forget."

Chris, 15, added: "We're really proud of ourselves."

The boys are planning for careers in the mechanics industry and hope their experience they have gained over the last year or so will stand them in good stead.

Kyle, 17, told the Tele: "I think it's amazing that a small, little team from Scotland made it to the home of Formula One."
