RESIDENTS from two local care homes danced through the decades at the first ever Inverclyde Seniors' daytime disco.

Groups from Glenfield and Bagatelle care homes attended the launch of the event in McGeoch's, which was organised by social enterprise Weekday Wow Factor.

The organisation, founded by public health occupational therapist Pasna Sallis, aims to improve people’s health and wellbeing by organising local leisure activities during the day at minimal cost.

The daytime discos have proved popular elsewhere and she decided to bring them to Inverclyde.

Pasna said: “I am delighted by the response we have had so far."

The innovative sees pensioners get their gladrags on and head to the disco at 11.30am rather than 11.30pm.

Pasna explained: “I am excited to see this grow and would invite everyone to come along. There is no obligation to dance, people can come take in the atmosphere and meet new people.”

The launch disco was held in McGeoch’ after a kind gesture by manager Mia Farrell.

Mia said: “I studied music business at college and university. One of my lecturers was involved in music therapy and that gave me a keen interest too.

“We have taken what was Harwoods and are keen to support activities that the community can get involved with."

The venue was given to the group for free.

Pasna added: “When everyone started to dance I got quite emotional. I have wanted to do something like this in the area for a while and seeing it happen was great.

“Everyone was sitting down but when the music started they were on their feet. I hope the event goes from strength to strength."

Diana Knox, activity co-ordinator at Bagatelle and Glenfield, is already looking forward to the next disco.

She said: “All the residents loved it. Some who are usually quiet and reserved up dancing.

“The music is so different to what they are used to and they seem to like that.

“I think it’s a brilliant idea and we are already looking forward to coming back.”

The next Inverclyde Seniors' daytime disco will be held on December 4 and will be Christmas themed. Santa will also attend, with gifts for everyone.

The disco runs from 11.30am until 1.30pm in McGeoch’s Music Bar and entry is priced £5. The cost includes a light lunch.
