VICTIMS of domestic abuse are being helped towards a merrier Christmas thanks to a generous donation from McGill's owners Sandy and James Easdale.

The Greenock businessmen handed over a cheque for £1,000 to Inverclyde Women's Aid on behalf of the bus company.

The money will go towards the charity's work supporting women, children and young people affected by abuse - and pay for a special Christmas treat to help lift their spirits.

Sandy Easdale said: "We think it's a good cause to support, particularly at this time of year.

"It's a local charity that not only helps women but children too and this donation will help them to enjoy a special treat in the run-up to Christmas. "This is our first time donating to Inverclyde Women's Aid.

"As soon as the request came across the desk, we were keen to take the opportunity to donate. "McGill's Buses supports a lot of charities and we feel this particular one is very deserving."

James Easdale added: "We're really pleased to be helping such a worthwhile cause, especially with Christmas just around the corner."

Inverclyde Women's Aid, based in Greenock's George Square, has been providing support to local people since 1985. Staff offer information, support and temporary refuge accommodation to women and their children.

June McDermid, from the charity, said: "The donation from Sandy and James will allow us to provide Christmas gifts to our children and young people who often struggle to cope with the effects of domestic abuse, especially at this time of year.

"Quite often children will feel scared, confused, lonely and sometimes blame themselves for what has happened.

"As a support organisation it is our job to help them explore their feelings and to understand that they are not to blame or alone in dealing with their fears and anxieties.

"For many families, spending time together at Christmas is a happy time.

"Sadly, we must remember that not everyone can share that same experience. "The impact of this donation from Sandy and James is invaluable to the women and children who are extremely grateful to receive this. "It will allow staff at Inverclyde Women's Aid to ensure that all children and young people receiving our help will not be excluded from Christmas due to their circumstances. "Being able to provide toys and gifts will make a wonderful difference and we plan to ensure that mums also enjoy their time together with their children visiting Santa, a trip to panto and having fun at the Christmas party.

"Without the support of local businesses and the kind people who live within our community this would not be possible."
