FILTHY fly-tippers are using a rundown Port Glasgow housing estate as a rubbish tip.

A disgusting mess has been blatantly dumped right next to bins and a warning sign about illegal dumping in Maxwell Street in Clune Park.

Amongst the mountain of rubbish is a sofa, fridge freezer, bed, table, crates and piles of general household waste.

Local resident David Owen, who lives in nearby Robert Street, described it as an 'absolute disgrace'.

The furious 70-year-old told the Tele: "It's been getting steadily worse for about four weeks now.

"I've lived up here for six years and this is the worst I've ever seen it.

"I think it's disgusting and it's also a health hazard, as it'll probably attract rodents.

"Fly-tippers are coming up in cars and vans at night and dumping stuff rather than taking it to the cleansing facility.

"I also think that people who are moving out of flats are just dumping their stuff here."

As well as condemning the people who have dumped the rubbish, David says he has contacted Inverclyde Council about the mess and says it should be cleared up as a matter of urgency.

He has also called for them to take steps to prevent further episodes.

Mr Owen said: "The council should be ashamed letting it get this bad - I bet this wouldn't happen in the west end of Greenock.

"It needs to be cleaned up now.

"I don't see why they can't put CCTV cameras up to stop it from happening again.

"There are no cameras here.

"If we had CCTV it would make a difference."

The Tele has asked Inverclyde Council for a response.
