ORGANISERS of a Tele-backed Christmas toy appeal today thanked loyal readers for their unwavering support.

Maureen Pentland, from the Greenock Salvation Army, has praised on those who have once again donated so generously to the organisation's annual festive drive.

The toy appeal, which has been on the go for over three decades, ensures under-privileged children across Inverclyde do not miss out on a present from Santa and enjoy a merrier Christmas.

A staggering 632 individual youngsters from 390 families directly benefited 12 months ago - one of the busiest ever.

Organisers are expecting even greater demand this time round and are still looking for donations of new toys and clothes.

Mrs Pentland picked up a huge pile of goods which had been handed into the Greenock Telegraph office from reporter Paul John Coulter and thanked those who have already given so generously.

She said: "You can see it's all really good stuff - the usual high standard. "Thanks to those who have donated and who donate so generously each year - Tele readers, individuals, companies, businesses and church groups.

"It's very much appreciated and will make such a huge difference to those who benefit from the toy appeal."

The festive charity drive helps children aged from birth to 12 years and all recipients of a Christmas treat are referred from the likes of the Inverclyde social work department, health visitors, Barnardo's and other partner agencies.

Mrs Pentland said: "Up to now there's been a good response, but we're always looking for more donations as we expect the demand this year to be even greater than last year."

Items can still be handed into the Telegraph office on Crawfurd Street or the Salvation Army citadel on Regent Street, via the Roxburgh Street entrance.

The deadline for donations is Friday December 13.
