A MAGICAL tree is making dreams come true for children in Inverclyde this Christmas.

Greenock Tesco is running a festive toy appeal to help vulnerable families at this difficult time of year.

Community champion Lorella Sutherland has decorated the tree with wishes from boys and girls.

She is working to support charities including Inverclyde Foodbank, Women's Aid and Barnardos to help parents struggling to cope with the expense of Christmas.

The initiative works by allowing customers to take a tag from the tree which has a gift that will be distributed by the chosen charities.

The store says it has been overwhelmed by the generosity of locally people as they rally around the cause.

Inverkip mum Ann McIntosh, 55, spoke to the Tele while in store to take a tag from the tree.

She said: "I am taking my third label from the tree, this time for my mum. We are going to get a teenage boy headphones.

"I like the idea that the presents are for children of all ages. I have two boys myself and it is so sad to think of children with nothing to unwrap on Christmas morning.

"It is a fantastic idea."

The initiative was run again for 2019 after being declared a massive success last time around.

Organiser Lorella Sutherland says she was overwhelmed by the response to her Giving Tree and by the end she had trollies full of presents.

The gifts donated were handed over to frontline charities who work with the most vulnerable families in Inverclyde.

Lorella said: "It has been very popular again so far. It is just great to help those who deserve it the most.

"We want every child to have presents under the tree on Christmas morning."

Some of the children have asked for gifts including Lego and dolls.
