A REMARKABLE Greenock lady celebrated her 100th birthday in style with family and friends.

Jenny McDougall, who still lives in her own home in Adam Street, marked the milestone with a bash at the Greenock Wanderers clubhouse.

The great-grandmother is an east end girl and has always kept true to her roots, never moving more than half a mile from where she was brought up.

Her son Douglas, 68, said: "Spending time with people and talking to everyone is my mother's secret to a long and happy life - and healthy eating.

"She is very people orientated and she still cooks every meal from scratch.

"She is one of seven siblings and all of them pretty much lived into their 80s.

"She wasn't the youngest or the oldest but she's been the luckiest.

"My mother believes in everything in moderation. She still enjoys a glass of sweet sherry but she is fairly clean living."

Jenny was married to her late husband Peter, who worked in the fire service, and the couple were blessed with two boys, Douglas and Robin, 61.

She also has two grandsons, Douglas's son Euan and Robin's son Gavin, and great-grandchildren Cara, nine, and Jamie, six.

Douglas, a chartered surveyor, said: "I'm hearing of more and more people living locally to their 90s and into their 100s. It's wonderful.

"For someone who was born in 1919 and lived through two world wars, my mum is pretty remarkable."

Jenny also did her bit during the wars and served with the RAF for five years. She was also a skilful seamstress.

She was a regular church-goer and still is fairly independent, despite breaking both hips during the last 10 years.

Douglas said: "She is a very positive person and has a good outlook on life. Mum lives in a little cul-de-sac and has superb neighbours who look out for her and it was great to see them at her party.

"It was an excellent celebration."

Instead of presents, Jenny asked for donations to the RAF Benevolent Fund and Fire Service Benevolent Fund.
