PUPILS and staff at a Gourock high school hit top gear as they raised more than £1,500 through a 24-hour cycle to help people with mental health problems.

A group of S3 pupils from St Columba’s were joined by teachers as they took on a gruelling all day cycle as part of the Youth Philanthropy Initiative.

More than 40 pupils took part in the round-the-clock pesal power challenge.

They were joined by staff members, numerous ex-pupils, visitors and partners who all got on the bikes to raise awareness and money.

Inverclyde Leisure supported the event by loaning spin bikes for the event.

Greg Starling said: “We completed the 24-hour bike ride and what a success it was.

“Numerous pupils have already asked to take part in the 24-hour cycle in 2020.

“All the staff talked about how well all the pupils and guests did and the attitude of all the participants.”

The group worked as a team, 'subbing' in and out to allow others to rest and get some sleep.

The group were raising money for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), who are leading a movement against suicide.

At the end of the challenge they had raised more than £1,500 through a JustGiving page.

The school would like to thank everyone for their support and they say the fundraising page will remain open until December 31.
