A CELTIC fan who issued threats towards two Rangers stars after the Ibrox club defeated his team in the latest Old Firm match has been locked up.

Steven Pettigrew appeared from custody at Greenock Sheriff Court late on Friday afternoon to plead guilty to an online breach of the peace offence.

The dad-of-four, 34, of Port Glasgow, took to Twitter in the aftermath of Rangers beating Celtic 2-1 at Parkhead to target two Ibrox players.

Pettigrew, who had been at the game at Parkhead, admitted that within his social media posts he made threatening an offensive remarks directed towards goalscorer Ryan Kent and Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos, who was sent off in the closing stages of the game.

He handed himself in to police over the matter on Thursday night — ten days after committing the offence on December 30.

Defence lawyer David Tod made a motion for his client to be allowed bail ahead of a sentencing hearing but this was refused by Sheriff Michael Higgins.

But the sheriff told Pettigrew, of the Port's Dougliehill Place: "This is a serious matter to which you have pleaded guilty, and it was committed while you were on bail."

Sheriff Higgins noted that Pettigrew has a number of similar convictions on his record as well as ones for committing offences whilst on bail, and for violence.

He said: "I consider that you present a substantial risk of absconding and that the public interest would not be protected by you being admitted to bail."

Sentence on Pettigrew has been deferred until February 4 so that a background report can be prepared.

He will remain remanded in custody until then.
