A YOUNG woman will need major surgery after being viciously attacked with an 'edged weapon' in Greenock yesterday.
The 20-year-old victim was within a close on Kelly Street at around 4pm when she was set upon by another female who was wearing a long black hooded jacket.
She suffered multiple injuries.
Police who are today hunting the attacker say that they are following a positive line of inquiry but have appealed for further information from the public.
Detective Sergeant Ross Macdonald, of Greenock CID, said: "The victim sustained significant wounds to her head and her hands after being seriously assaulted with an edged weapon.
"The attacker ran off from Kelly Street in an as yet unknown direction.
"The injured female will require extensive surgery."
It is understood that the woman was initially treated at Inverclyde Royal Hospital but has since been transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where she is expected to undergo the surgical procedure today.
