TWO super swimmers showed their depth of talent by clinching Scottish junior titles at a major competition.

Clydeview Academy S4 pupils Matthew Garrity and Aimee Watson, both 15, who train with Inverclyde Amateur Swimming Club, both took podium places at the Scottish National Short Course Championships.

In her first event, the 50m breaststroke, Aimee swam extremely well to make the A final.

Finishing in sixth place in the senior event, she was the fastest youngster and crowned the new Scottish junior champion.

On the final day of competition, Aimee once again made waves after she finished seventh in the senior 100m breaststroke to take her second junior champion title of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Matthew battled illness to claim the Scottish Junior Champion title in the 100m breaststroke.

Aimee, from Gourock's Reservoir Road, said it was an amazing experience to swim next to elite athletes including Commonwealth champion Hannah Miley.

She said: "I was only 0.1 second behind Hannah Miley in the 50m breaststroke.

"It was intimidating but I wasn't as nervous as I thought I was going to be."

Matthew, 15, of Finbraken Drive, dug deep at the competition as he was suffering with a heavy cold.

He said: "I felt really happy to be honest because I wasn't feeling great."

Matthew also had the chance to meet his swimming idol the Commonwealth champion Ross Murdoch.

He added: "He's a really down to earth guy."

Matthew's parents Jennifer and John and his younger brother Luke 12, are so proud of his achievements.

Jennifer said: "Matthew was loaded with the cold but he struggled through on the day to become the Scottish Junior Champion in the 100m breast stroke U17 category.

"He tried really hard, he has so much determination and a will to win.

"We are really proud of him as he works really hard so he deserves the success as he does put the effort in."

Equally as proud was Aimee's parents Steven and Alison.

Steven said: "As a daughter she is a delight.

"She is a very talented swimmer and enjoys it.

"Obviously she has got a clear determination, when she stands on the swimming blocks she just goes for it.

"There's a lot of kids in Inverclyde that do amazing things in sport and swimming and Aimee is one of a great bunch."
