A PORT Glasgow butcher is enjoying a slice of success after celebrating the best festive season for 20 years.

Drew McKenzie, owner of Robert Alexander Master Butcher in Princes Street, says it was a record year.

The businessman sold 1,000 steak pies over the new year period alone.

Drew, who is also a local councillor, said: "The 30th December was the best single day since we opened in this shop 20 years ago.

"It been a record festive season for me, and I am sure Duncan MacKenzie and Nigel Ovens at McCaskie's have been the same.

"It's a year where people have gone back to the butchers.

"I think we offer better quality than the supermarkets."

Turkeys were also flying out the shop last month.

Drew said: "We sold between 200 and 300.

"Boneless turkey breasts as part of a hamper is the way most people now buy their turkey, as opposed to the whole bird.

"We sell it in a cooking bag, with chipolatas, stuffing and cranberry sauce."

The shopkeeper says that the fact that Christmas fell on Wednesday gave retailers more trading days to cash in on.

He said: "That was very significant.

"It gave us Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before Christmas and the same for new year.

"We had eight really busy days.

"People feel that Christmas and New Year are the most important of the year and they want to get it right."
