AN INVESTIGATION into the killing of a Southampton teenager is still on-going.

Police were called to reports of an assault on Lindsay Road, Thornhill, on January 19 at 6am.

Officers found the 17-year-old with a stab wound and he was rushed to hospital, but later died of his injuries.

Here is what we know so far...

What happened and where?

Daily Echo:

On Sunday, January 19, police were called to a house on Lindsay Road in Thornhill.

Officers were called at 6am to reports of a serious assault, and found a 17-year-old boy with stab wounds.

The teenager was rushed to Southampton General Hospital, but that afternoon police issued an update that the boy had died of his injuries.

Yesterday, police identified the 17-year-old as James Laurie of Montague Avenue.

What happened next?

Daily Echo:

A 15-year-old boy from Andover was first arrested in connection with the incident but was re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

Officers set up a cordon in a large area of the residential estate using police tape and cars to stop people from entering the scene.

Yesterday, forensic teams were seen investigating the house where it is believed James was stabbed.

Around ten police cars surrounded the scene, and officers were seen knocking on the doors of other houses in the area.

Tributes for James

Daily Echo:

Friends of James paid tribute to him describing him as an “outgoing and funny” friend, who loved his music and rapping.

Kayne Law, a friend of James, told the Daily Echo: “He was a really lovely lad, so bubbly and always making people laugh.

“He loved his rapping, we were only about 12-years-old when he got me into rapping and I’ve never stopped since then."

James Gunn added: "It doesn't seem real that he has gone.

"He was always making everyone happy with his good vibes and banter.

"It's mad to think we grew up together and were best mates for a few years."

Another friend said: “He was really funny and just nice to be around, if you went out with James you knew you would be fun.”

How the community reacted

Daily Echo:

Officers are manning a large cordon that runs around the residential area, including Hinkley Road.

Residents have reported seeing dozens of police cars on Lindsay Road and the surrounding roads in the Thornhill area.

One resident said: “It’s shocking that it has happened so close to home.

“It’s like a ghost town around here now, everyone is either too scared to leave their homes or too upset to face anyone.

“I’ve lived here all my life and I have never heard of a murder here.”

One member of the community, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I heard shouting and arguing in the morning.

“It’s so sad it happened to someone so young.”

Another added: “It’s frightening. I opening the curtains and saw the road all cordoned off.

“It’s sickening that it has happened to a child. Knife crime is disgusting. It’s always been quiet. It is shocking that it is on our door step.”

What have the police said

Daily Echo:

Chief Inspector Phil Lamb said: “This is a tragic incident in which a young man has lost his life. We believe at this stage that this is an isolated incident, but we are still keen to hear from anyone who was in the Thornhill area on Sunday prior to us being called at 6.15am.

“In addition to the specially trained Family Liaison Officers who are supporting James’s family, a team of detectives, specialist search officers and neighbourhood officers are working on what is a broad and fast-paced investigation.

“We will be conducting extra patrols in the area over the coming days, not only to reassure the community, but also to support the investigation and the searches that we anticipate taking place.

“I understand that the community will be both saddened and concerned by James’s death, so I would again appeal for anyone who has any information to either speak to our officers, call 101 quoting Operation Tint, or leave information via our online portal mipp.police.uk/operation/44HC20W01-PO1.”
