YOUNG music maestros from Craigmarloch School were top class as their talents took the 95th Inverclyde Music Festival by storm.

Greenock Town Hall was buzzing as around 50 pupils had their chance to shine at the annual event.

Pupil Rebekah Burke, 14, said she loved performing on the festival stage.

She said: "I really enjoyed it.

"It makes me feel good when I sing."

Shay Weir, 14, added: "It makes me feel happy when I play the trombone."

Talented pupils in the Soundstart brass and percussion group, which includes 33 children from P5 to S3, received a rapturous reception when they took to the stage to play a wide variety of instruments including the trumpet, cornet, baritone, trombone, glockenspiels and drums.

They performed three pieces 'Razzamajazz', 'Get the Lowdown' and 'Mr Cool' with pupils Shay Weir, Grace O'Brien, Rhys Sharpe and Joseph McIlwee all relishing the chance to introduce the songs to the audience.

Soundstart is taught by Inverclyde brass tutors while three more experienced pupils -Mikey McGowan, Euan Lei and Shay - helped out.

Craigmarloch's Red Hot Rock Stars, the school's primary school choir, took to the stage to sing a song called 'The New Teacher' - and also signed in Makaton.

Also taking to the stage was pupil Niamh McTaggart who performed with the Inverclyde Junior Choir last night.

Tomorrow seven pupils from S1 to S6 - Kacey Martin, Aidan and Mikey McGowan, Rebekah, Euan, Shay and Ross O’Donnell - will perform in the orchestra class.

Music teacher Jill Henderson told the Tele she 'is incredibly proud of them'.

She added: "The festival gives an opportunity to perform and to show the musical strengths of our pupils."

Teacher Claire McKenzie, who is the school's Makaton leader, added: "The young people have really taken to singing and signing at the same time, which is not easy."
