A MAJOR expansion of the caravan park at Wemyss Bay has been given the green light.

The owners of Kellybank have won permission to use a field at Kelly Mains Farm, next to the Parkdean caravan park, for up to 50 extra caravan/mobile home pitches.

Pennine Leisure, who bought the park in 2002, also plan to open a restaurant in the farmhouse or other building.

The company say the move will boost tourism and provide jobs.

Bosses at the firm said it was a 'major investment' and an 'unique opportunity' to expand the size of the park and boost tourism in the district.

They said: "We believe our plans will result in long-terms benefits to the local environment and community by enabling us to attract more tourism to the area and provide additional employment for local residents."

"If we are successful in acquiring the farm, our initial plans are to develop the front field which overlooks the Firth of Clyde for up to 50 neatly laid- out pitches, with plenty of play and parking areas in a layout which would be similar to that owned by Parkdean on the land adjoining."

"It is intended that each pitch will have, at least, a partial sea view.

"The existing farm house could be converted into a bistro/restaurant catering predominantly for caravan owners, rental occupiers and their families although passing walkers and locals would also be welcome.

"Alternatively, we would seek to construct a purpose-built bistro including office space, alongside the farm house.

"We believe, from local advice and our own experience that there is a need for this facility."

The operators plan to develop outbuilding storage facilities into an entertainment centre with leisure activities for children.
