FRESH questions have been raised over a plan for a long-awaited car park in Kilmacolm.

The council drew up a shortlist of locations for spaces to be created in a bid to relieve congestion in the area.

It went out to consultation and after members of the public had their say the list was whittled down to two options.

The two preferred options put forward are at the corner of Moss Road and Gillburn Road and behind the old police station.

But now there are concerns over one of the sites which could delay the badly-needed development.

The plans were being discussed by councillors at a meeting of the environment and regeneration committee when the SNP's Chris Curley said he was concerned about police station site.

Mr Curley pointed out it was located on greenbelt land.

He said: "One of the things I'm concerned about it is the fact that one of the sites is on a greenbelt.

"Could we possibly consider a slight adjustment to the design?

"There is an old brownfield site at the railway, there's a huge area of land there.

"Could we open it out to see what else we can do?"

Council officer Gail MacFarlane replied: "We can have a look at that when we go through the design phase."

Council leader Stephen McCabe told committee members it was important that the right location is chosen for the car park so that people use it and this reduces congestion and helps businesses.

He said: "We need to think through the physical design and a strategy so that it's actually used.

"There's absolutely a need for more car parking in Kilmacolm but we need to make sure that it's a car park that is used."

At the end of the debate councillors agreed that designs and costs should be produced for the two options currently on the table.

A report with a recommendation to move forward will be brought back to a future meeting of the committee.
