BONNIE bravehearts toasted the Bard in true Scottish style.

The 'tartan tots' at Newark Nursery in Port Glasgow danced, sang and enjoyed Scottish food as part of their special celebrations to mark Burns Day.

Head teacher Hazel Mitchell, said: "Our children have been learning lots of Scottish rhymes and songs this month to raise cultural awareness of Burns Day - through their experiences at Nursery and at home as we've shared our learning with their families.

"This continues to further develop children's literacy skills and musicality.

"These skills lay the foundations for children's reading and writing skills when they are a little older and in school."

Mrs Mitchell said that the children have also enjoyed sharing the songs they have learned with the pensioners from Newark Care Home.

She added: "The songs we have chosen also reflect the songs that our friends in Newark Care Home like to sing with us too.

"We visit Newark Care Home regularly and the residents have been to visit us too in nursery and like to join in with our play activities and our singing time."

Mrs Mitchell was also keen to highlight that the nursery has recently received a gold award alongside Newark Primary School following a 'rigorous' inspection.
