Gas works are underway at the bottom of Kingshill.

Wales and West Utilities has shut one lane of Wootton Bassett Road between Redposts Drive and Westcott Place. Drivers are still able to use the westbound carriageway from Old Town towards west Swindon.

Traffic is being diverted eastbound down Redposts Drive and through Wichelstowe. Delays are mounting.

The firm says the Kingshill latest work - from February 17 to 21 - is 'essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses and so local people are kept safe and warm for generations to come'.

Signs will be in place and the area will be marshalled between 7am and 7pm.

Swindon Advertiser:

Wales & West Utilities Mick Gallavin is the project managing this gas pipe upgrade work. He said: “We know that working on roads like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

"We’ll be working as safely and as quickly as possible to make sure the work is completed in a timely fashion, while keeping inconvenience to a minimum for local people and road users.

“Most of the gas network is underground and out of sight but it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Swindon and the surrounding areas.

"Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work will not only keep the gas flowing safely and reliably today, it will also help make sure the gas network is fit for the future and can play its part in delivering reliable and affordable green energy.”

Access will be maintained for people needing to travel to the junction of Redposts Drive and The Runner, as well as for those businesses located between Great Western Way and Redposts Drive.
