A PILOT keep fit class looks set to become a permanent fixture after it took off in great style.

The '30 minutes for 30 days' challenge ended on a high with a celebration day at Branchton Community Centre.

The sessions have been so popular that centre bosses have agreed to keep the exercise programme going.

Carol McEwan, project development officer, said: "It's been so busy and so popular we decided we should keep it going.

"We were quite surprised how busy it's been - we had over 40 people in total and on average 25 to 30 people every day.

"It's only ladies who have come along so far, but it is open to everyone.

"We've had very positive feedback and so many people had asked us to keep it running.

"We have parents with babies in their prams and even had a wee one in his walker.

"It's not just about the exercise - a lot of people say that they have noticed an improvement in their mental health, as it's getting them out the house and meeting other people.

"It's an easy class to join, you don't have to be super fit or super slim or wear the latest sports gear.

"We also have a breakfast club in the morning, where people can get a healthy breakfast for 50p."

Carol says the class has attracted people from outwith Branchton who have also found out about other activities available there.

Fiona Jackson, a new admin assistant at the centre, is also a personal trainer and she has been taking the class alongside her own job.

Class members held a collection and presented her with flowers to thank her for leading the exercise sessions.

Carol took part and says she is feeling better for it.

She said: "I hate exercise but I went to the class every day and I really enjoyed it and felt good after it."

The classes will now cost £1 and they run Monday to Thursday from 10-10.30am and 9.45-10.15am on Fridays.
