ROADS and footpaths across Inverclyde are set to receive a major £3 million boost over the next financial year.

Council chiefs plan to splash out £1.4m on resurfacing carriageways, while more than £300,000 will be used to improve footways.

There are also proposals to inject £300,000 into structural projects - such as work on bridges - and £520,000 on replacing damaged street light columns.

A total of £125,000 has been set aside for works to 'other assets', such as drainage and signs, while £370,000 has been budgeted for fees and staffing.

The proposals form part of the council's five-year Roads Asset Management Strategy for 2018/23.

A report to the environment and regeneration committee also asks members to approve £107,000 for works to improve the area's cycling network, which will be funded by a Scottish Government grant.

If the plans get the green light, stretches will be resurfaced on Greenock's Brougham Street, Ardgowan Street, Ardmore Road, Auchmead Road, Belville Street, Braeside Road, Burns Road, Customhouse Way, Dellingburn Street, Baker Street, East Blackhall Street, Finneston Street (full length), Maple Road, Mars Road (full length), Old Largs Road, Tobago Street and Wellington Street.

Finlaystone Road in Kilmacolm will also be resurfaced from Yetts Avenue to Lepperstone Road, while the village's Milton Road will be overhauled from Lochwinnoch Road eastwards for 850m.

Cloch Road in Gourock, from Farm Road to North Lodge, is the only other road in the treatment plans.

Pavements will be upgraded on Greenock's Ardgowan Street, Brisbane Street, Luss Avenue, Davaar Road (full length) and Regent Street, and on Gourock's Cloch Road, Garvie Avenue, Dunvegan Avenue, Staffa Street, Tantallon Avenue and Tower Drive,

Work will also be carried out on Gryffe Road and Lochwinnoch Road in Kilmacolm and on Port Glasgow's Alderbrae Road, East Woodside Avenue and Southfield Avenue.

Around 750 street light columns will be replaced at various locations across Gourock, Greenock, Inverkip, Kilmacolm, Port Glasgow and Wemyss Bay.

The proposed programme of work for structures also includes the design and construction of a replacement culvert in Lynedoch Street in Greenock on the eastern line of falls, as well as the widening of Glenmill Bridge in Kilmacolm.

There will be minor bridge repairs at other selected locations which have not yet been specified.

The cash for 'other assets' includes the design of a car park in Kilmacolm and work to put traffic calming measures in place on Lyle Road, Greenock, if the committee rubber-stamps plans for the latter.

Members of the environment and regeneration committee will decide whether to give the plans the go-ahead at a meeting next Thursday.
