CHILDREN living in one of the poorest countries in the world will have a brighter future thanks to Greenock bargain hunters.

Thoughtful youngsters from Struthers Memorial Church youth group organised a charity nearly new sale in the Oak Mall shopping centre on Saturday.

Thanks to the generosity of shoppers, the sum of £530 was raised for Aid for Education - an Inverclyde charity run by local couple Douglas and Sarah Kakooza.

The money will be used by the charity to fund a head teacher to work at the charity's school in Rwamagana in Eastern Rwanda.

Leah Marks, who is a bible class teacher at the Struthers Memorial Church youth group and also works part-time as a science teacher at Cedars School of Excellence, praised the community for their support.

She said: "Quite a few of the kids have been to Rwanda and I have been there myself with Cedars School in 2013 and 2017 - it was great.

"We've worked with the charity a lot over the years.

"It has just recruited a new head teacher to work at its school in Rwanda, so we decided to organise the nearly new sale to fund the new head teacher's post.

"Our target is to raise £2,500 and so far we've raised £1,600.

"At the nearly new sale on Saturday, people were so lovely and we also had so many donations for the sale, which was great."

Leah says the group hope to organise a car wash soon to raise more funds.
