FUMING drivers have been issued with an apology after roadworks caused chaos in Greenock.

Bosses at Scottish Water have said sorry to motorists who experienced lengthy queues and long tailbacks this week after a solitary manhole had to be coned off on East Hamilton Street.

Several drivers contacted the Tele to complain about the road restriction which saw queues snake back from East Hamilton Street to the roundabout at the Tesco store in Port Glasgow.

Traffic restrictions have now been lifted.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “The repair to the manhole was completed on Tuesday and the traffic management was taken off the road before peak travel time.

"We apologise to road users for any inconvenience this vital repair work caused.

"The partial lane closure was necessary for the repair work to be carried out safely."

Meanwhile, drivers have also complained about delays on the A8 at Langbank due to the road flooding at the railway bridge.

It has been reduced to one lane on a number of occasions during the recent stormy weather and a probe is now under way into the drainage system.

A spokesperson for Scotland Transerv said: "Through a series of extreme wet weather events and named storms, the ground in this area has become saturated.

"Rivers across the region have also burst their banks due to these persistent showers.

"Greenock’s average rainfall for February has been significantly higher than normal.

"Scotland TranServ operatives and contractors have been on site, removing flood water using vactor suction units and tankers.

"Currently investigations are ongoing into the wider drainage network in the area, including the outfall into the River Clyde which may have become inundated by recent storms, leading to restrictions in the capacity of the system.

"Scotland TranServ will continue to keep the community updated on our findings."
