DISABILITY campaigners are ‘delighted’ after a car park access problem highlighted in the Tele was fixed by council bosses.

The Tele reported on local wheelchair user Johanna Stewart contacting ward councillor Elizabeth Robertson about access to the bullring parking bays for people with mobility problems.

Johanna, an Inverclyde disabled services activist for over 20 years, contacted Cllr Robertson to spotlight unsuitable roads, pavements and lack of dropped kerbs in the town centre car park.

The Broomhill resident took a video of the issues and Cllr Robertson then raised it with the local authority’s roads department.

Now remedial work has been completed to make things better.

Cllr Robertson said: “The path has been resurfaced to take away the unevenness that was evident from the film clip that Johanna sent initially.

“The work was completed within the agreed timescale and both Johanna and I are delighted the issue has been resolved.”

Johanna says she is pleased the work has been carried out and glad that the area is now much more wheelchair-friendly.

Cllr Robertson added: “I’ve had people contact me to say they are thankful the work has been carried out, but didn’t think asking would make a difference.

“I’d like to say that not all issues are able to be resolved as easily, but I’d like to remind local residents they can always ask.”

Following the Tele’s report on the Bullring issue, another local resident contacted Cllr Robertson to ask for dropped kerbs at other key sites in the town centre.

The council have now agreed to look at completing the necessary work, with a timescale for it to be set out.
