ANGRY residents are calling for housing bosses to step in and remove rubbish dumped in a Port Glasgow street.

The mess in Westfield Road on housing association land, includes a microwave, TV, printer, white cabinet units and piles of black bin bags.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said the fly-tipping is 'unacceptable'.

They said: "When will people learn?

"The pile of mess that has been left is a disgrace.

"Hopefully it will be cleaned up soon.

"It's an eyesore."

When the our sister newspaper The Greenock Telegraph contacted Inverclyde Council about the illegally dumped rubbish a spokesperson said that as the mess was left on land owned by River Clyde Homes, it was their responsibility.

But the local authority added: “It is completely unacceptable to leave any mess.

"Fly-tipping is a blight on our society.

“We have refuse centres at Pottery Street in Greenock and Kirn Drive in Gourock so there really is no excuse not to dispose of rubbish responsibly.

“We would urge members of the public who have information about fly-tipping or those responsible to let us know by calling the Dumb Dumpers helpline on 0845 2 30 40 90 or via the Inverclyde Council Customer Service Centre on 717171."

The council spokesperson also warned people that there are severe repercussions for fly-tipping.

They said: "Anyone caught fly-tipping can face a £200 on the spot fine.

"A court conviction can lead to a fine of up to £40,000.

"We always investigate illegal dumping and, where possible, will pursue those responsible and seek the most severe punishment.

"“It is also worth remembering that householders can be fined for rubbish from their homes or gardens that is illegally dumped by tradespeople they hire.

“Just last week, two litter bugs in as many days were hit with £80 fines for throwing rubbish out of their car windows.

“We cannot and will not tolerate fly-tipping or littering in our communities.”
