PORT Glasgow's famous community spirit is alive and kicking in its childcare hubs during the coronavirus crisis.

Schools and nurseries in the town are pulling together to help frontline key workers at a time of great need.

As they fight against the coronavirus they know their children are safe and having fun at the hub in Newark Primary.

Head teacher Lynne McGugan, who is helping to run the hub, said: "Honestly it is just incredible here in the hub.

"Everyone is working together.

"It is great getting to know everyone in the nurseries better.

"We are getting to spend quality time with the children.

"We even have babies here, which is just lovely.

"The keyworkers are so grateful to us and are saying thank-you but really it is us who are thanking them.

"The community in Port Glasgow is really special.

"It is a privilege to be part of it in the hub."

Youngsters attending the hub have the freedom of indoors and outside as they enjoy activities on their doorsteps while observing social distancing.

During the Easter holidays the children have had full access to the facilities while their parents work.

There are around 100 children attending a total of 11 centres throughout Inverclyde during the schools shutdown.

The childcare hubs are run by education staff, with volunteers from across the council helping the doors stay open.
