PLANS to build a four-storey block of flats beside the former Gourock Ropeworks in Port Glasgow have been lodged with Inverclyde Council.

Developer Merchant Homes is seeking permission to construct 28 apartments which would be housed within a building 'sympathetic' to the old Ropeworks - which are Category A Listed - at the site off Bay Street.

The housing firm want the green light for 12 one-bedroom properties and 16 with two bedrooms, all accessed via an internal lift.

The development would include a car park with spaces for 28 vehicles.

A design document submitted by architects Bruach Design and Consultancy, of Clydebank, states: "The proposed development aims to be sympathetic to the historic ropeworks building.

"The flatted block should complement the prominent brick of the Ropeworks, whilst introducing modern elements such as balconies."

The statement adds: "The proposal aims to use a simple palette of materials, using subtle brick detailing to create depth to the facades much like the Ropeworks."

The proposed development — which is now being considered by council planners — would occupy the derelict btriangular site between the A8 and the railway line through Port Glasgow.

The district's largest housing association, River Clyde Homes built 41 properties on land on the opposite site of Gourock Ropeworks two years ago.

Each proposed new apartment in the Merchant Homes development would have an open plan kitchen, living and dining areas.

The Telegraph contacted the company to invite them to comment on their planning application.
