A KIND Greenock dad decided to transform his garage into a foodbank to help people in need during the coronavirus outbreak.

Keyworker Shayne Stride, who works for Qualis Scotland, is carrying out emergency boiler repairs for vulnerable customers during lockdown.

When the COVID-19 crisis began, Shayne started to ask customers over 60 if they needed any supplies brought in - and soon realised that there were many people who needed a helping hand.

Shayne and the Qualis Scotland team are now delivering shopping - free of charge - to individuals and families who need it most.

Following a Facebook appeal, Shayne assembled hundreds of non-perishable items in his garage.

He is now providing food and supplies for up to 10 families a day.

Shayne, 32, said: "Early in lockdown, I visited an older lady who wasn't able to get out and she was really struggling for food.

"I brought her a few things back from the shop and it just went from there.

"I've been totally overwhelmed by the response from the community and blown away by all the donations from people across Greenock and Port Glasgow.

"The community has really come together to offer support to families who are struggling.

"People are asking for help every day.

"I hate to think of families going without.

"It's a wider issue than COVID-19 - people are living in poverty."

Shayne and the team can pick up donations and drop them off free of charge.

The project has received kind donations from Heinz and McGhee's bakery, as well as from Stewart Stores and the Matthew Woodman Foundation charity.

Shayne has been funding many of the deliveries himself so has now set up a Paypal account for donations to keep the community project going.

He added: "Everyone needs help from time to time so please don't be embarrassed about asking.

"Just a little bit of help will make sure kids and families have a meal.

"We want to give something back to our local community for supporting us."
