A GREENOCK man has been charged with taking part in a three-on-one assault in the middle of Greenock and robbing the alleged victim of a car.

Christopher Beaton, 29, is said to have repeatedly struck another man on the head and stolen a Renault Clio from him on Duncan Street.

Prosecutors say that two other attackers were involved in the alleged incident on May 28 last year.

Beaton, of Merlin Avenue, appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court on the matter.

He made no plea through lawyer Aidan Gallagher during a brief petition hearing in private and was allowed bail.

Sheriff Joseph Hughes has continued the case for further examination.
