INVERCLYDE'S councillor expenses bill has been revealed with Provost Martin Brennan topping the list with £6,658 worth of costs — nearly £2,000 more than last year.

Tory David Wilson has broken through the £4,000 barrier for expenses on top of his £19,753 salary for being an elected member and chair of the planning board and is second on the list.

Meanwhile, SNP group leader Chris McEleny claimed just £60 during the 2019/20 financial year and again has lowest rate of all 22 of the district's councillors.

Councillor Brennan's expenses total comes in at £1,928 above his final bill for 2018/19, which stood at £4,730.

He said last year that the vast majority of those costs were incurred as a result of his role as Inverclyde's civic figurehead.

This included having to use an official car and being accompanied by a council officer when attending official events where the Provost's chains are required.

Overall, combining the salaries and expenses of all elected members, the total cost of our councillors stands at £439,046 for the last year.

Local authority leader Stephen McCabe was the most expensive elected member with a salary of £28,249 and expenses totalling £2,417 — which is £617 less than last year.

Councillor Wilson's total expenses of £4,028 were £258 above the £3,770 he claimed in 2018/19.

The overall total expenses bill fell year-on-year by £707 from £19,829 to £19,122.
