OFFICIALS from Morton Club Together hope they can reawaken Ton as a Scottish football force by their historic takeover.

As reported in the Tele today, the fans' investment group will become majority shareholders of Morton next year, taking a 90 per cent stake from current owners Golden Casket.

Director Ivor McCauley says supporters can now join together and write a new chapter in the club's long history.

He hopes the takeover will re-energise the club and the local area.

Mr McCauley told the Tele: “Hopefully community ownership can bring the glory years back to the club and the people of Inverclyde.

"It’s a chance for the club to have a clean slate and write its own story, of re-energising the club so that we can set it up for success on and off the park."

Ivor says the legacy left behind by the departing Rae family is a strong one which can be built upon.

He said: “You can't ignore that Douglas Rae and his family saved the club.

"It wouldn’t have been here today if they hadn’t have stepped in in the way that they did in 2001.

“I remember it very well - it was a painful period for the club so what they’ve done in that time is paramount.

“I would like to think that what they are supporting just now is something that Douglas would’ve supported.

“It’s been said that he’d like to see the club back in the community, so I hope that what they have done and what we hope to do supports his vision in the future.

“It’s a phenomenal legacy - to save the club from the brink, put in a huge amount of their own resources over that time and then pass it on to the fans at a peppercorn fee.

“It’s a chance for the club to have a clean slate.

“Opportunity is the one word here that sticks in my mind and what this is all about, we’ve got a massive opportunity.

“Maybe we can bring a spirit and energy back around the club and success along with that.”

McCauley says the project will be carefully planned to ensure the plan long-term stability of the club.

He said: “It’s not just about winning titles, it's about the fanbase, keeping everyone in the loop and being commercially astute.

“If we can get all of that right then it gives us the best possible platform to get it right on the pitch and do something.

“We’re not Roman Abramovich, we’re not going to pump millions of pounds into the club, we’re a loyal voluntary base who will hopefully grow and make the club more efficient.

“Hopefully people can now start to see that we are genuine and professional and hopefully they will want to contribute to help the club.

“We just hope that the people of Inverclyde will join us and grasp this opportunity.

"We've all got a role to play in making our own success now.

“This is a real opportunity for the people of Inverclyde to do something that’s ahead of the game."
