GENEROUS golfers swapped low scores for high as they turned their hand to quizzing in aid of local cancer patients.

Members of Gourock Golf Club set themselves a fun fundraising challenge to raise money for Ardgowan Hospice and were able to donate £1,350.

Now they are hoping to embark on a even bigger fundraising mission - by hosting an online quiz next week that anyone in the world can participate in.

Allan Warwick, general manager at the club, said: "The first fundraising venture ran for three weeks in May where members were set the task of creating words of four or more letters out of 'Ardgowan Hospice'.

"For every word, families set a donation amount, whether that be 25p or £1, and at the end the person with the most words donated the amount to the hospice.

"People were much more generous than expected, so we are really looking forward to this next fundraising effort and we hope as many people as possible will get involved."

The virtual quiz is on Thursday July 16 at 7.30pm and will have six rounds, each with five questions each, covering topics like general knowledge, sport, film, TV or music.

Allan hopes lots of members of the club and supporters of Ardgowan will get involved.

He said: "The website we will be using will show each participant the question, which will be multiple choice, and they'll have 20 seconds to answer before the next one appears.

"It will be £3 to enter and 60 per cent of the takings will go to Ardgowan Hospice, 20 per cent will be split between the top three quizzers and 20 per cent will cover the running costs.

"We had a trial run with committee members and it was very successful, so we hopeful that it will top up our fundraising efforts for such a worthwhile cause."

Elaine McNeill, fundraising officer for Ardgowan Hospice, said: "We're really thankful to Allan and Gourock Golf Club for still fundraising for us during what is a hard time for everyone.

"The quiz is a fantastic idea and we are looking forward to seeing its success.

"We hope as many of our supporters as possible will get involved."

As an added incentive, everybody who takes part will be placed in a draw and one person will win a free adult golfing membership at Gourock Golf Club for the whole of 2021 - worth £760.
