A man was violently assaulted by a group of thugs with weapons in broad daylight in Motherwell yesterday. 

Officers raced to Watson Street around 2pm on Tuesday after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a group of men armed with weapons. 

The man was seriously injured and was taken to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment, but his injuries are not life-threatening. 

Two men, who were traced to a nearby house, were arrested in connection with the incident. 

Further police investigations led to the arrest of another man in a nearby address.

A number of weapons have been recovered during the investigation. 

Two men, aged 52 and 29, are due in Hamilton Sheriff Court today in connection with serious assault, assault, disorder and possession of weapons. 

A 48-year-old will also be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to assault, disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

All parties are known to each other and there is no wider risk to the community.

Detective Sergeant Scott Wilson of Lanarkshire CID said "Officers were alerted to this incident by CCTV operators and the local business community.

"Thanks to a swift response and thorough investigation, the males responsible were traced and arrested, while the injured male received the required medical attention.

"The local business community are thanked for their assistance ".
