INVERCLYDE has been dubbed a 'swimmers' paradise' after Lunderston Bay was listed as a designated bathing water by the Scottish Government.

Depute Provost David Wilson has welcomed the move in time for the official bathing season, which runs until September 15.

When the weather is warm Lunderston becomes a magnet for sun-seekers, with families enjoying days out, picnics and paddling in the Clyde.

All year round it draws lots of walkers eager to sample the stunning views and fresh air on the Firth of Clyde.

Councillor Wilson says Lunderston Bay is popular with both locals and visitors alike and he believes its new title as a designated bathing spot will be an added attraction.

He said: "In conjunction with the Gourock Outdoor Pool this makes our area a swimmers' paradise."

"I am sure there are some hardy souls out there who would swim beyond September."

Lunderston Bay is run by Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park and facilities have been improved in recent years to boost the beauty spot's appeal.

It boasts a picturesque coastal path, benches, a large grass area and beach.

Cash has been invested on improving its transport links and on installing loos.

Cllr Wilson says it is money well spent on one of the jewels in the crown of Inverclyde.

He told the Tele: "Facilities have been improved at Lunderston Bay by the addition of bus bays and the toilets.

"It is the most popular tourist attraction in Inverclyde in terms of visitors and in conjunction with the excellent Cardwell Garden Centre across the road.

"It is a fine venue to spend a few hours walking, rock pooling or simply enjoying the nearest beach on the south of the river to Glasgow."
