A DANCE coach from Greenock is one in a million after taking on an exercise mission for a mental health charity.

Gemma Campbell, a fitness, dance and gymnastics coach and choreographer at Diamond Studios in Gourock, has pledged to walk one million steps for the Scottish Association for Mental Health.

The big-hearted 24-year-old says she is helping SAMH after seeing how friends and family have benefited from their services.

Gemma said: "SAMH have always been a charity close to my heart.

"When studying my psychology degree at the University of the West of Scotland I became more aware of how many people are actually affected by mental health, and it's not given the attention it needs.

"I have noticed that many other charities are widely supported so felt I would choose SAMH as I know both family and friends who have benefited from their services."

Gemma, who coaches youngsters in DMDiamondz and Dancemania alongside her mum and founder of the dance school, Ann Marie Campbell, is hoping to reach her goal by mid-October.

She said: "I am quite a determined individual and I will complete my challenge before the deadline on October 18.

"I'll be walking 10,000 steps a day and have set a target of £200, but I hope to smash that."

Gemma chose one million steps as believes there are millions of people that suffer from mental health issues.

She added: "I have noticed during our online Zoom classes for dancing that the pandemic is taking its toll on numerous athletes on our team.

"These vibrant young individuals have slowly become a bit withdrawn as the weeks have gone on.

"I am sure there will be quite a few people in Inverclyde and surrounding areas who have been shielding or are fearful of going out due to the virus which undoubtedly could lead to poor mental health.

"More funds are needed to offer the support that is needed.

"I would be very grateful if any local businesses or individuals would like to donate towards this very worthy case."

Gemma's family are proud of her for undertaking the challenge.

Her mum said: "We are so proud of her - she is such a thoughtful, kind hearted young lady and she always puts others first.

"When she decided she wanted to do this challenge we were delighted and told her we will be behind her every step of the way.

"SAMH is a great charity and hopefully she manages to raise lots of funds for them."
